winter daphne

ジンチョウゲ 沈丁花 瑞香

Daphne odora (lit. fragrant daphne) is a species of flowering shrub of the genus Daphne in the family Thymelaeaceae, native to Asia. Commonly called winter daphne, it is known for its showy, fragrant flowers. It blooms in mid to late winter, as the common name suggests.

Winter daphne flowers grow in clusters, usually at the end of stems surrounded by leaves. The flowers have four pointed petals, with two upper petals overlapping the two lower petals; the petals are actually tepals (undifferentiated petals and sepals). The flowers are creamy white and pink to purple, usually whitish or pinkish on the inside and pink to purple on the outside. Although rare, the plant sometimes produces berries after flowering. All parts of the plant are poisonous, especially the berries.
