stargate (series)
A military science fiction media franchise based on the 1994 film of the same name. It is centered around the eponymous Stargate, a large ring-shaped device of ancient alien origin that acts as a portal to other Stargates located throughout the galaxy.
The franchise is based on the ancient alien trope where aliens visited Earth in the past and helped raise early human civilization. The aliens, known as Goa'ulds, enslaved humanity until a rebellion drove them off Earth and buried their Stargate to prevent them from returning. The franchise proper takes place in modern times where the Stargate has been secretly rediscovered and taken by the U.S. military. They use it to explore alien worlds while battling the Goa'uld who have gone to conquer the rest of the galaxy.
Besides the original 1994 film, the franchise consists of several series and movies including:
