stag beetle
A type of beetle with large and distinctive mandibles that resemble the antlers of stags (male deer), hence the name.
Characteristics of stag beetles include partial to complete division of the eyes by a canthus, geniculate antennae, and distinctly separated coxae. The body is typically elongate and slightly flattened.
Stag beetles are not to be confused with rhinoceros beetles.
