The Kraken Regiment is a Ukrainian special forces unit operating under the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (GUR). Formed in February 2022 at the onset of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it was established by veterans of the Azov Regiment and other military volunteers. Unlike Azov, it is not part of the National Guard but operates under Ukraine’s military intelligence, giving it a degree of operational independence.
Based in Kharkiv, the Kraken Regiment has participated in several high-profile operations, including urban warfare, reconnaissance, and sabotage missions against Russian forces. It is known for its aggressive tactics and unconventional warfare, often conducting deep-strike raids behind enemy lines.
Due to its ties to Azov, Russian propaganda frequently portrays the Kraken Regiment as an extremist group, though the unit itself does not officially use far-right symbols or rhetoric. It remains one of Ukraine’s most elite and secretive special forces units, playing a crucial role in defending and liberating occupied territories.
