Song contest organized annually by the European Broadcasting Union in collaboration with the the countries whose broadcasters are in the union, largely based in Europe. Held since 1956, developed as a way to take advantage of live television broadcasting and a way to produce cheaper programming for national broadcasting organizations. Related to it is the defunct Intervision Song Contest, held in Eastern Europe from 1965 to 1980, as a competitor to the Western European Eurovision.
