Origin: Liaozhai zhiyi (Liaozhai; Chinese: 聊齋誌異), known in English as Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, a Chinese romance fantasy novel. It's a collection of Chinese folk tales by Qing dynasty scholar Pu Songling (蒲松龄). Many of the stories collected have to do with ghosts and fox spirits.
