聖徳太子 (Shoutoku Taishi, Prince Shoutoku) also known as 厩戸皇子 (Umayado no Oujii, Prince Umayado, lit. the prince of the stable door)
A historical Japanese prince and regent from the Asuka period. Prince Shōtoku was a real man, but the accounts of his life are mostly legendary. He appeared on the 10000 yen note from 1958 to 1984, when he was replaced by Fukuzawa Yukichi.
