The second largest flowering plant family in the world, with ~28,000 accepted species. Which makes this an umbrella tag for a very wide variety of plants, often with very divergent appearances. One common trait is that their flowers have three sepals ("outer petals"), two petals ("inner petals"), and one labellum ("lip"), the labellum can be miniscule like in Phalaenopsis or oversized like in Oncidium.
