Originally a royal yacht named Emperor, it was seized by Tokugawa loyalists during the Boshin War and renamed Banryū. At the Battle of Hakodate in 1869, it sank the corvette Choyō but was in turn heavily damaged and had to be beached. It was eventually salvaged and passed through several owners before being scrapped in 1897.
